The short version
Two good platforms, two different jobs
Barracuda and Mimecast both sit in front of your mailboxes and filter what Microsoft 365 lets through. They are not interchangeable. Barracuda packages threat protection, incident response and Microsoft 365 backup into named plans and is usually the faster platform to run with a small IT team. Mimecast leans towards compliance-heavy environments: archiving with legal hold, e-discovery, continuity during an outage, and awareness training for staff, all bought as one subscription.
For a UAE business the choice usually comes down to three questions: how many people manage the platform, whether you carry a retention or e-discovery obligation, and how much of your risk is human rather than technical. Everything below works through those questions with a Dubai and wider UAE lens, and separates what each vendor documents from what each vendor claims about the other.
Choose Barracuda if
- One or two people run IT and security between everything else
- You want backup of Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams in the same contract
- You need a deployment that does not force an MX record change on day one
- Your budget conversation starts with a published plan tier, not a custom quote
Choose Mimecast if
- An auditor, a regulator or a free zone authority asks about retention and e-discovery
- You run hybrid mail, or Google Workspace alongside Microsoft 365
- Staff behaviour is the weak point and you want training tied to the security platform
- Mail has to keep flowing during a Microsoft 365 outage, not just be protected
What each platform actually is
Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda sells email security as part of a wider security portfolio that also covers firewalls, web application protection and backup. Its Email Protection line is published as named plans, Advanced, Premium and Premium Plus, with the plan page documenting spam and malware filtering, ransomware and phishing defence, business email compromise detection, link protection, attachment sandboxing, DMARC reporting, encryption, email continuity and data loss prevention. Microsoft 365 backup appears in the two higher plans and cloud archiving in the top one.
Deployment is flexible: the vendor documents API-based connection into the tenant, inline filtering and a traditional MX record route. That matters for a Dubai office that cannot take a mail flow risk during a working week. We deploy and support Barracuda email security in Dubai for clients who want protection and backup under one renewal date.
Mimecast Advanced Email Security
Mimecast is a specialist. Its product page names Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and on-premise mail as supported environments, and the platform is built around scanning mail, attachments and URLs for impersonation fraud, ransomware, phishing and spear phishing. The subscription bundles compliant archiving with legal hold and e-discovery, continuity, encryption, internal email protection and security awareness training rather than selling them as separate line items.
It connects either as an MX-based gateway or through in-tenant API scanning, so hybrid estates are well served. Organisations that want the archiving and training side bundled in usually end up looking at Mimecast in Dubai for exactly that reason.

Local threat picture
What UAE inboxes are actually hit with
The attacks that cost money here are rarely exotic. They are payment redirection emails aimed at accounts teams, impersonation of a managing director during the Friday and Saturday weekend when nobody verifies by phone, and credential theft against Microsoft 365 accounts used by staff working from home or from a site office.
- Invoice fraud: a supplier thread is hijacked and bank details change one line at a time
- CEO impersonation: a lookalike domain or display name asks for an urgent transfer
- Account takeover: a stolen session token gives an attacker the mailbox, not just a password
- Quishing: a QR code in an attachment moves the payload onto a personal phone
First, check what you own
Where Microsoft 365 stops
Microsoft 365 already filters spam and known malware, and the higher licence tiers add safe links, safe attachments and automated purge of messages found bad after delivery. Many UAE businesses buy a third party layer before they have switched those controls on, which is expensive twice over. If your licence already covers it, tuning O365 Advanced Threat Protection is the cheaper first move.
A separate layer earns its cost when you need something the native tooling does not do well: retention and e-discovery you can hand to an auditor, mail that keeps moving during a tenant outage, backup of mailboxes and SharePoint, or a single console that covers Microsoft 365 and an on-premise or Google Workspace remnant at the same time. That is the honest test for both Barracuda and Mimecast.
Barracuda vs Mimecast: quick comparison
Both vendors publish comparison pages attacking each other, so the table below sticks to what each one documents on its own product and plan pages. Anything a vendor asserts about its rival is treated as a claim, not a finding, and is flagged in the notes underneath.
| Capability | Barracuda | Mimecast |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing and malware filtering | Documented across all Email Protection plans | Documented, with URL and attachment scanning |
| Ransomware and sandboxing | Attachment sandboxing on the plan page | Targeted threat protection on attachments and links |
| BEC and impersonation | Behavioural analysis of internal mail patterns | Impersonation protection plus user awareness training |
| Account takeover | Native detection of login and mailbox anomalies | Covered through internal email protect and identity signals |
| Email continuity | Included in the published plans | Included, a long-standing strength of the platform |
| Archiving and e-discovery | Cloud archiving in the top plan only | Compliant archiving with legal hold in the core offer |
| Microsoft 365 backup | Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams in higher plans | Not part of the email security subscription |
| Data protection | DLP and encryption documented | DLP, encryption and DNS filtering documented |
| Reporting and DMARC | DMARC reporting and analysis in plan | Detailed reporting plus 350+ vendor integrations |
| Deployment options | API, inline or traditional MX record | MX gateway or in-tenant API scanning |
| Mail environments | Microsoft 365 focus | Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and on-premise |
| Published pricing | Named plans, minimums apply, quote paths | Quote based, bundled rather than modular |
Notes on vendor claims: Barracuda states that Mimecast lacks native account takeover detection and does not back up Microsoft 365 data. Mimecast states that Barracuda charges extra for essentials and offers fewer integrations. Each is a marketing position from a competitor, not an independent test result. On Gartner Peer Insights both sit at 4.5 stars, Barracuda across 504 reviews and Mimecast across 796.
Pros and cons, platform by platform
Barracuda
- Console is quick to learn, which suits a two-person IT department.
- Backup of Microsoft 365 data sits inside the same platform.
- Three deployment routes, so mail flow risk can be managed.
- Plan structure is public, so budgeting starts from something concrete.
- Archiving only arrives at the top plan, which changes the maths for regulated firms.
- Reviewers report the message log is tedious when tracing a single quarantined mail.
- Breadth across many products can mean less depth in any one of them.
- Minimum user counts can make very small deployments awkward.
Mimecast
- Archiving, legal hold and e-discovery are part of the core subscription.
- Continuity keeps mail moving when the tenant is down.
- Awareness training is tied to the same platform that catches the threats.
- Covers hybrid and Google Workspace estates, not only Microsoft 365.
- More configuration surface, which is wasted on a ten-person office.
- Reviewers describe the interface as click-heavy for basic settings.
- No Microsoft 365 backup, so that stays a separate purchase.
- Pricing is quote-led, so like-for-like comparison takes longer.
Deployment and management
The part that decides whether it works
Pick the connection method before the brand
API connection inspects mail after delivery and needs no DNS change. An MX route filters before delivery but puts the vendor in your mail path.
Budget for tuning, not just licences
Both platforms over-block in week one. Somebody has to release legitimate mail from quarantine and adjust policy per department.
Decide who owns it on a Sunday morning
Neither platform is useful if quarantine sits unread. Businesses without a full-time security admin usually fold this into managed IT services in Dubai.
Scale is about policy, not seat count
Both scale to thousands of mailboxes. What breaks first is policy sprawl across branches, so agree a naming and exception standard early.
Commercials
Where the cost actually hides
Headline per-user figures circulating online contradict each other and none of them reflect a UAE quote, so treat any number you see as a starting point for a conversation rather than a price.
- Minimum user counts
- Which plan tier holds archiving
- Backup licensed separately
- Awareness training as an add-on
- Sandboxing and URL rewriting inclusion
- Contract term and renewal uplift
- Data export fees at exit
- Onboarding and migration effort
- Reseller versus direct terms
- VAT and local billing currency
- Support hours in Gulf Standard Time
- Cost of the internal time to run it
The pattern is consistent: Barracuda tends to look cheaper at the entry tier and rises as you add archiving, while Mimecast tends to quote higher upfront with more of the compliance tooling already inside. Total cost over three years is the only fair comparison.
Which fits which kind of UAE business
Small business, 10 to 50 mailboxes
A trading or contracting office in Bur Dubai with no dedicated security staff. Barracuda is usually the better fit: fewer knobs, backup included, faster to hand over.
Mid-sized, 50 to 500 mailboxes
Multiple branches across Dubai and Abu Dhabi, one or two IT staff. Either platform works. Decide on whether archiving and training belong in the same contract.
Enterprise with a security team
Integration depth and analyst workflow matter more than simplicity. Mimecast's integration count and reporting granularity usually win the technical evaluation.
Regulated: healthcare, education, government
Retention, legal hold and defensible search decide it. Mimecast's bundled archiving is the shorter path to satisfying an auditor or a free zone authority.
Compliance, data residency and hybrid teams
Where the data sits
Both platforms hold copies of your mail. Ask each vendor in writing which region processes and stores it for your tenant, and get that into the contract before signing, since regional availability is not the same as regional storage.
What auditors ask for
UAE frameworks and free zone rules increasingly expect evidence of advanced threat protection, defined retention and a documented incident response path. Screenshots of a dashboard are not evidence. Exportable reports are.
Remote and hybrid staff
Staff checking mail from a phone on a site visit are the ones who click. Whichever platform you pick, pair it with phishing-resistant sign-in and simulations, because filtering alone does not fix a stolen session token.
A four-week evaluation that actually settles it
- 1 Baseline
- 2 Scoped pilot
- 3 Live test
- 4 Decide
Baseline what you have
Turn on the Microsoft 365 controls your licence already includes, then measure what still gets through for two weeks.
Pilot one department
Run finance or procurement first. They receive the invoice fraud attempts and will tell you fast if legitimate mail is delayed.
Test the response, not the filter
Simulate a delivered phish. Time how long it takes to find every copy and pull it back across all mailboxes.
Price three years, not one
Ask both vendors for the same user count, term and scope, including renewal uplift and export terms, then compare.
Before you sign
Six questions worth asking out loud
- Who releases a quarantined invoice at 8am, and what is their response time?
- If we leave in year three, what does it cost to export our archive?
- Which plan tier holds the feature we are actually buying this for?
- Does support answer within Gulf Standard Time working hours?
- Can the platform show an auditor a defensible search result?
- What happens to mail during a Microsoft 365 outage?
Recommendation
Who should choose what
Choose Barracuda if you are an SME or mid-sized UAE business running Microsoft 365, with a small IT team, no formal retention obligation, and a preference for protection, incident response and backup on one invoice. It is the lower-friction platform to deploy and hand over, and the published plan structure makes the budget conversation shorter.
Choose Mimecast if compliance drives the decision: healthcare, education, government-linked entities, financial services and anyone in a free zone with retention or e-discovery duties. Choose it also if you run mixed mail environments, or if the honest assessment is that your people, not your filters, are the exposure. The archiving, continuity and awareness training bundled into one subscription is what you are paying for.
If you are genuinely undecided, the tiebreaker is not the feature list. It is which platform your team will still be tuning in month six. A well-run Barracuda beats an ignored Mimecast, and the reverse is equally true.
Email is one layer of a bigger picture
Filtering does not help if backups are untested or sign-in is weak. Our cybersecurity checklist for UAE SMEs walks through the rest of the stack, and we advise on both platforms as a vendor-neutral partner rather than pushing one licence.
Frequently asked questions
Is Barracuda or Mimecast better for a UAE business?
Neither is better in general. Barracuda suits SMEs and mid-sized companies that want simple management and Microsoft 365 backup in the same contract. Mimecast suits regulated organisations that need archiving, legal hold and e-discovery, or that run hybrid and Google Workspace mail alongside Microsoft 365. Match the platform to your compliance duty and your available admin time, not to a feature count.
We already pay for Microsoft 365. Do we still need a third party layer?
Not always. Microsoft 365 filters spam and known malware, and higher licence tiers add safe links, safe attachments and post-delivery removal of messages later found malicious. Switch those on and measure the gap first. A third party layer earns its cost when you need archiving you can defend to an auditor, continuity during an outage, mailbox backup, or one console across mixed mail environments.
Will either platform stop invoice fraud and CEO impersonation?
Both detect lookalike domains, display name spoofing and unusual internal mail patterns, which catches a large share of these attempts. Neither stops all of them, because the most effective versions carry no malware and no bad link. Pair the platform with a payment rule that any change of supplier bank details is verified by phone to a previously known number, never to a number in the email.
Which is better for a small Dubai office with no IT team?
Barracuda, in most cases. The console is quicker to learn, deployment can go through an API connection without touching MX records, and backup of Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams sits in the higher plans. The bigger question for a small office is who watches quarantine daily, which is why many businesses this size run either platform through a managed service rather than in house.
Do Barracuda and Mimecast keep our email data inside the UAE?
Do not assume so. Both operate globally and the processing region for your tenant depends on how the service is provisioned. Ask each vendor to confirm in writing which region processes and stores your mail and archive, and have that written into the agreement if a regulator, a free zone authority or a client contract requires local handling.
How long does deployment take and will mail stop during it?
An API-based connection can be live in a day for a small tenant because mail flow is untouched. An MX-based gateway takes longer to plan because DNS propagation and mail routing have to be scheduled, usually over a weekend. In both cases the real work is the following two to three weeks of tuning quarantine and policy exceptions so legitimate mail is not delayed.
Can we switch from one to the other later?
Yes, and switching the filtering layer is straightforward. What is not straightforward is the archive. If you have accumulated years of mail in a vendor archive, ask about export format, export cost and how long the export takes before you commit. That single question changes the total cost of ownership more than any per-user price on a first-year quote.
